can’t resist

Can’t resist posting this pic though I realize it’s not a commercial beauty shot. Still — sometimes I have an appreciation for photos a bit on the darker side of commercial.

forest fire haze sunrise
July 25, 2008
Whatever you think about forest fires, the haze from the smoke does make for cool sunrises and sunsets. This photo is a sunrise (not quite as early as I hoped… the sun rises EARLY these days!) shot near Mt. Adams recently during a fire.

So when I’m not out shooting photos of myself floating on log rafts with the dog on mountain lakes, I actually shoot quite a bit of fashion in Portland, Oregon. In fact, opened the local weekly newspaper just today to find two of my photos in ads for Portland boutiques. Pretty cool, eh?

If you’re a boutique owner or fashion designer or fashion model– I’d love to help you out with photos. My fees are VERY reasonable so you best book now– they definitely are going up in the near future to cover the increased cost of, well, damn near everything these days!
how i spent my summer vacation part II
July 21, 2008
Okay, so just a few more pics from the camping trip. I’m always intrigued when I see signs shot up like this– this one happened to be at a campground and a three way intersection. Note the two rounds near the bottom of the “T” — nice and tight! Ironically, I also saw a Pacific Crest Trail marker shot up and that was a ways up a wilderness trail.

Bush-whacked and found this awesome waterfall one day– it was a good thirty foot drop. There was so much brush though that I couldn’t get a clean shot of the waterfall so I opted for the flowers nearby.

Here’s just the top part of the falls. The cool thing is the water was noisy enough to create nice white noise at my campsite– a good half-mile away.

So there are a lot of old, rotted out trees in this area– some really rotten and standing. This tree had been standing at my favorite campsite for years and was recently chopped down by the forest service as a safety hazard. You can see it’s pretty hollowed out!
So the forest service has really freaked out lately and actually closed two of my favorite campsites in this area because there are snags (dead standing trees) in the vicinity. The thing is– there are snags everywhere in this area! I get the safety issue but there’s also a balance between paving over a site and keeping it wild. If you cut down every potential snag, pretty soon your campsite looks pretty bland and tame.

And here’s the irony– one night some dumb ass teenage boy with a hatchet decided to go up to one of those “closed” campsites and he hacked down a live tree right in the middle of the campsite! It’s irony because if the site had been “open”, I would have been camping there and the tree wouldn’t have been chopped down. But it was “closed” so this kid was able to do his stupid, thoughtless vandalism without anyone around. And this was on a Friday night! I know it was the dumb teenage boy because I heard the hatchet and saw him leaving after he cut the tree down. Stupid, stupid, stupid– I get the feeling this kid has some family issues to deal with (he was camping with his dad and it sounded like it was “dad’s” weekend with the kid).

Anyway, onto cooler photos. The lupines were just starting to bloom and they really caught my eye.

So I got to do a lot of snorkeling too. It’s almost like leaving the world behind when you’re swimming underwater and floating and can’t hear the world above. Very surreal.

And finally, a couple of unretouched landscape photos of the lake.

how i spent my summer vacation…
July 21, 2008
Okay, so I went on a camping trip this past week with the dog.

We camped by a lake. And yeah– I wish my legs always looked this long! It was a relaxation trip so really, I didn’t shoot much more than snapshots. It can be hard to relax if you’re always trying to nail a shot.

So there was this log raft that has been at this lake for years. Someone painted “Bee Happy” and two bees on one of the plywood pieces nailed on as a deck to the raft. It’s a fun raft to play on with a black lab!

Under the surface of the lake is mostly pretty bland but there are occasional trees like this one. Big ol’ old growth trees that fell over into the lake.

My apologies to all the food photographers out there– just a snap with my G9. The important thing is these are my made from scratch versions of mcmuffins– veggie sausage and all.

Okay– this shot isn’t a snap. I actually canoed out to this log and used a tripod and ND grad filter. Still haven’t worked my magic in post on any of these…
… and probably more to come.
