not like “girl, interupted” at all

January 30, 2008

Did short tour of one of the crumbling, decaying wards of the state hospital today. The hospital is around a 100 years old and has several wings that are so deteriorated they can’t be used by patients at all.

The state plans to build a new facility, but in the meantime, the old one is in pretty dire shape– at least parts of it.

headless

Another shoot last night (I’ve been BUSY lately)– catalog style photos on location– at the boutique itself. Here’s one of my typical goofy test shots. The camera is actually braced on my step ladder with the self-timer set– super-duper high tech!

The client wants headless shots– sometimes footless too– that pretty much just show the clothes. Here’s a sample:

The cool thing about this type of shooting is that if I meter and WB properly, there’s no retouching, just a batch processing of the RAW files. Though there was a lot to shoot last night, well over 300 pics of spring designs!

burning the midnight oil lately

Couple big photo projects due so I’ve been working well past midnight to get them done. Here’s a sample from last night/this morning that I really liked. Shot with a RF as key and three other lights (kicker plus two on the background). It really looks stunning as a high-res (and it was shot with the 5D– so there’s incredible detail). I actually like the gray band at the bottom on this one too, though it’s different than my usual style.

Alright, and here’s another from last night that looks better as a high res than a web res… again, the detail is really, really cool. So of course the irony is that of course these clothes are from different designers and completely different photo shoots, but they both submitted their final selections yesterday and needed them as fast as I could get them done.

But that’s the beauty of hiring a professional photographer — I was able to complete and deliver the files on-time. When you hire a pro, you know you’ll get what you need and you’ll get it when you need it. That piece of mind is worth it.

Had to cancel my shoot for today due to snowy/icy roads. The model was coming from two hours away, and it just wasn’t worth the risk– here in western Oregon drivers aren’t used to snow/ice and the roads can turn into a nightmare. No snow right now in Portland though– which is too bad since I love snow.

Okay, so I’m going through the photos from yesterday and my problem is I always want to stop and do quick tweaks of images to see what they’d look like! So it takes me forever to get through my photos.

One thing we were working on yesterday was more motion/action type photos and I’m actually really happy with the results. I’ll post more later.

cool shoot/models

Shoot today with a couple of really cool models. It was a studio shoot seeing how the weather was 34-degrees and raining hard. This model above was exceptional in her posing– just one rockin’ pose after the other. Very inspiring to work with.

environmental portraits

Ahhh… one more recent photo. This is an audio engineer prepping for a live radio show. I shot this using existing light (not my favorite way to shoot, but sometimes that’s the only option) where I actually held the camera at arms length over the audio board. Not too bad for a grab shot under poor lighting conditions, I’d say.

Posted a couple new portraits on my website this past week– so check them out. This was a favorite recent one. It wasn’t technically from a portrait session, but still seems like a cool photo to me.

natural plus strobe

Still working through the post-work on this shoot. A really cool shot would have been the model in the actual satellite dish… but I’m not sure if that would have messed up the dish or not. Guess if I was Steven Meisel, I would have taken the chance… but my budget is a bit more limited than his!

fun with tungsten

Alright, here’s the original with a tungsten WB. Below is a quick “sandwich” with a layer mask to let the correct temperature of the strobe show through. Pretty cool, eh? I could have used a tungsten gel for the same effect– but this just shows another benefit of shooting RAW files.
