portland fashion photos

Worked with this model, Stephanie, yesterday. Fun model to work with. Here she’s modeling a dress from Frocky Jack Morgan.

This photo has not been touched up– pretty cool for a straight-out-of-the-cam image!

Makeup by Terri Lodge and hair by Julie Ruckman.

Here’s another–  yeah, I kind of went crazy with the RF this weekend, but sometimes it’s the fastest tool to use and I really do love it’s effect. This is just foam core for the set… another “tool” I’ve been loving lately!

One more just to prove the RF isn’t my only lighting trick. Actually, the RF is the background light here (firing into an umbrella) fitted with a blue gel– the key is a beauty dish, fill is two umbrellas down low, and there’s actually a strip dome masked off as the kicker. Five lights– whew! Now you can see why I’ve been loving the speed and ease of the ol’ RF as key, eh?

beauty shots portland oregon

Couple shoots this past weekend– here’s a completely unretouched (note the dust spot in lower left– time to clean that sensor cover!) photo from one shoot. This model is from China. She’s writing her masters thesis on the Chinese fashion industry. She was great for this shoot. For both these photos, hair by Julie Ruckman, makeup by Amy Gillespie. Note the snowflake that looks like a tiara! Sometimes even I’m blown away at the cool styling that hair and makeup people come up with. The shimmery fabric was my contribution.

We shot two models, four looks for this particular shoot. Jamie is another of my fav models for beauty shots– again, this is a completely unretouched image. Her skin really is that perfect!

snow photos – portland oregon

portland photography

Headed out with a parks crew yesterday for the ol’ day job. Of course we picked the one day of the year it will probably snow– good thing for rubber boots and rain gear!

The crew was hunting down– and removing– invasive plants like this holly bush.

It was absolutely beautiful out there though– I only wish I had brought a tripod and my 5D with the ol’ 16-35 and some filters! I could have shot landscapes all day, but alas, that wasn’t why I was there.

Oh yeah– I was doing interviews and recording audio on a deck too– so it wasn’t a photo only trip. In other words, it was an off-trail slog in the woods on steep slopes in the snow and mud while trying to shoot photos, record interviews, and keep up with a crew who wasn’t used to waiting around for photo/interview ops!

You can see the audio slideshow I put together HERE

ahh, the nice place to spend the holiday

December 26, 2007

Just messin’ around at the beach over the weekend. Only took a p & s cam (G9!), messing with the on-cam strobe here. Fun shots rather than really high-end photos! There’s a built in IS that I think gives a bit of a painterly look in a shot like this. I did test it with off-camera flash too– with some success. More on that later.

oregon coast photography

Nah, the weather wasn’t this nice the whole weekend. In fact, this may have been the only sun we saw in four days!

Here’s the drive home– tons of snow in the coast range. Luckily, it was easy to drive thru with no chains (it was WET) but still cool to see snow on xmas day!

one place I’m glad I’m not spending the holidays

December 21, 2007

Sure, the conversation is probably pretty interesting, but I tend to need a bit more privacy when it comes to my day to day routines.

Oh yeah, and me and shackles and handcuffs don’t tend to get along very well. Way too much energy to keep it contained like that!

So just keep in mind despite all the weird family dynamics faced by many of us this holiday season, there are probably worse places to spend your holiday!

portland boutique fashion photos

Another one of my photos in Willamette Week newspaper yesterday in an ad for a local boutique called Moxie. They ran it as a b&w (as you can see in the photo inset) but I do need to pat myself on the back for the lovely mix of ambient sunset and strobe! This is one photo where I definitely prefer the color version!

Working a bit on these last night trying to come up with a couple shots I really liked. Also wanted to get a critique on a photo forum I frequent– damn those guys can be harsh but I really need that kind of blunt technique critique at times. Drives me to try new stuff that I might not have tried otherwise.

meter dork

Little more mellow on this shoot than last week.  Here you can see my ol’ standby lighting set-up.  It’s pretty tough to go wrong with it as long as you meter properly.
