Asked to shoot a photo yesterday and had to borrow a fellow co-worker’s camera since we’re still negotiating a decent DSLR body for work.
Canon Powershot S1 or something like that is what he had– I quickly tried to get it into manual mode, but the shutter speed wouldn’t budge from it’s 15-second setting! So I got the co-worker to pop it on tungsten WB, ISO 400, and P mode (“I don’t know how to use manual settings, I always use P mode,” he told me) and stepped into the studio to pop off about half-dozen photos.
Not my best work and certainly not a very smooth camera when it comes to ISO or manual settings! And of course, one of the photos ends up on the front page of my day job website! And… even more ironic… they ended up using another one for the actual story.
Strobists enthusiasts eat your heart out! Ha ha ha… just joking. What I would have done to have the IIn and a couple of strobes to light this, but sometimes you gotta shoot with what you have (a co-workers p&s or gasp– sometimes even a camera phone– really!)

Anyway, definitely not my best work but it’s always ironic to see something like this end up getting used so prominently.

Dear Vivian McInerny:
I wrote you a letter once and later met you in person at the Macy’s fashion show in Portland. You told me that my letter was ’snarky’ because I asked why you never covered local fashion in Portland? Now I see you’ve decided to start covering local fashion — well, at least some– since some local designers were mentioned in the May 2007 issue of Vogue.
Good for you! A local reporter covering local people– that’s what your newspaper needs. Though I’m sure sorry to hear about your newspaper’s decline in readers and especially it’s dramatic decline in younger readers, but hey, we can’t all work for media outlets that have a growing audience, right?
Anyway, it’s quite curious to me, Vivian McInerny, to see my photos used in one of your online stories about a local fashion designer. Oh don’t worry, us photographers don’t mind one bit when you use our photos with no credits. I mean, it’s not like I own the copyright to these images or anything like that. Wait– I do? Well that’s curious– I don’t remembering giving you, The Oregonian, or Newhouse permission to use these images. So is The Oregonian really so cheap and dishonest that you just use images without the copyright holder’s permission and without crediting the photographer? Sure looks that way.
Someday, Vivian McInerny, someday you’ll google your name and run across this post. When that happens, I encourage you to re-think your aversion to local freelance photographers. We really are a decent bunch and we really do deserve photo credits when you use our photos.
Here’s the link to Vivian McInerny’s story with my uncredited pics.
And of course, the link to my own website (which is much cooler that oregonlive and features loads of local fashion):

So Pete Springer Photography in Portland, Oregon shoots portraits too!
This is a portrait of Terri Lodge, one of the best makeup artists in Portland. I’ve worked tons with Terri (who is with Blush Premier) and her business partner Amy Gillespie (another stellar makeup artist). They’re both wonderful and if you need a professional makeup artist, I highly recommend them both.
Grabbed this shot of Terri just before a shoot this past weekend. Just think how cool your own portrait could be if you hired me for a custom portrait shoot? Did I mention I know a couple of excellent makeup artists who can also help you look your best for a shoot?

Ran across this photo last night while slogging through my list of post-production projects. Shot this recently for a Portland designer on location using a studio set-up. There are actually three studio strobes lighting this image.
So Portland-area designers and boutique owners and models– when it comes to location or studio fashion photography– Pete Springer Photography has you covered. I have a complete location kit and can light up your projects so the whole world can see just how cool the clothes are that you sell or design!

Couple of the photos from the pool shoot being used as a fashion editorial on ultra today. Yeah! Again, a big thanks is due to Terri Lodge and Amy Gillespie who basically did everything on this shoot but push the shutter button (makeup, styling, hair…) and to Harvest and Kristina for being willing to try out this crazy idea. Next time I’ll get an underwater housing for a DSLR rather than a crappy underwater p & s!

Coming soon to Portland photographer Pete Springer’s website– two recent shoots. The photo above is from a street shoot of Briana Cano designs. Definitely some cool photos in that set, and a good demo of how working on location can yield some pretty cool results.

And the other shoot I’m working on is a cool grafitti themed shoot. So stay tuned and check my website later this week for updates. I know I don’t post here every day anymore, but it’s not because I don’t have any new work to share! Mostly it’s because I’m catching up on my post-production.

Just finished up the post work on a very cool fashion shoot I did at an indoor swimming pool recently.
Terri Lodge & Amy Gillespie of Blush Premier deserve a HUGE chunk of credit for all their work to make this shoot happen! Also a big thanks to Quavondo “Vu” Nguyen for your assistance!
